Don't let Winter hold you back

Don’t let Winter hold you back!

In the winter months it’s very easy to fall out of your summer exercise routine.

Getting out of bed for a run when the sun is shining, and the grass is green is easy – not so much when it’s cold, dark and raining outside. Whether you’re a professional athlete or a fitness beginner, we’re all tempted to ditch our plans in the winter months.

To help you stay motivated, here are some tips and advice to keep you on track and chase away the winter blues.

Don’t Hit the Snooze Button

It’s tempting for us to hit snooze when it’s warm and cosy in bed, especially when it’s below zero outside. But waking up is half the battle during winter months, and it’s crucial to make a habit of getting up with your alarm.

Once you develop a routine, making the effort to stick to it each morning at the beginning will make it much easier to stay with it in the long run.

Warm Up before your Warm Up

Try keeping your heating on a timer so that your home is warm when you wake up.

You could also hang your workout clothes on, or near, a radiator – so you’ll look forward to getting ready and be ‘good to go’.

Stay Hydrated

Water is essential for any workout, but it’s also a great way to wake yourself up in the morning.

Starting your day with a big glass of water fuels both your body and mind, keeping you hydrated as well as flushing out toxins.

Work with a Trainer

Like most things in life, exercising with someone else can make it more fun and enjoyable. It also adds an incentive to keep going and a sense of accountability. Also, defined and targeted session planning means that your workout will be structured, making the most of the time you have available, and you’ll work harder than you would on your own.

Eat Right

It’s really easy to be tempted by comfort food during the Winter months, but it’s important not to give in – maintaining proper nutrition is vital to get the best results from your workouts.

Avoiding unhealthy foods will also help your immune system cope with the cold weather and ensure that you’re in tip top condition when facing the elements.

Get the Right Kit

When you’re up against mother nature, you’ve got to make sure that you’re well equipped. If you’re not wearing weather appropriate clothing, it’s all too easy to be disheartened and skip workouts. Base layers are a great way to stay protected from wind and rain, plus, they’re designed with comfort in mind.

There is no such thing as the wrong weather for exercising if you have the right clothing, and technical activewear gives you the freedom to take on anything the great outdoors has to throw at you.

So, get outside and keep powering through the Winter months – it will be worth it!
