The Power of Reflection

Reflection is Powerful

Reflection is a powerful tool and, as we near the end of the year and are busy planning for 2017, it’s important to reflect on the year that was 2016. As a part of the time I spend thinking about the events of my year, I answer these 4 important questions from both a business and personal perspective:

  1. What do I need to celebrate?
It’s so easy to focus on what we haven’t done, to beat ourselves up for it and not recognise and celebrate all that we have. I look back on 2016 as a year of huge changes, and I realise how much I’ve achieved.
  2. What do I need to acknowledge?
Life doesn’t always go to plan. No doubt you’ve had disappointments, and encountered challenges, as well as challenging people, that have called on you to dig into your reserves of kindness, resilience and bravery.
  3. Who do I need to thank?
During any given year, we receive support, encouragement and love from the people in our lives. Their impact on how we view ourselves and what we think we’re capable of doing can be profound. So, it’s a good time to think of the people who’ve supported us this year, and recognise how grateful we are to them.
  4. What new decisions will I make next year?
The decisions we make hold great power. Reflecting on the decisions we made this year and identifying which ones served us well, as well as those that didn’t, is an important part of identifying what changes can, and should, be made in the new year.

It’s also the time to decide on a new goal……..Perhaps a new challenge? Learning a new skill? I’ve decided on mine and, as always, it’s challenging. I’m now formulating my plan, including the all important milestones, to achieve it.

We will turn the last page of 2016 on Saturday. And after a period of reflection, on your 2016, start 2017 with determination, purpose and direction.
