Fat deposition in the body….that’s a phrase to conjure with. The fat in our bodies presents itself in different forms, and in a variety of areas according to factors such as age, sex and genetics.
Fat has been vilified for years, and can still be feared and hated in equal measure. But we do need fat in our diet, and to also store some fat in our bodies for optimal health. The types of dietary fat, and which ones to avoid, will be the subject of another Blog, but here I want to concentrate on some key strategies which will help any quest for a leaner physique:
- Track it
Keep a log of what you eat and drink every day. Record how long you have slept, how you feel, and your mood. Honesty is a must, and start with a month so that there is time to spot potential patterns, and possible ways to make changes. The log doesn’t have to be ‘War and Peace’; bullet points will be sufficient to build up a picture.
- Avoidance Tactics
Remove refined carbohydrates, sugars and as much processed food as possible from your shopping list; then add quality proteins, complex carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables as well as good fats.
- Go Easy on Snacks
They can add up to blood sugar level fluctuations, low mood, and sleep disturbance – all counter-productive to achieving and maintaining the high energy levels necessary for fat loss.
- Schedule Exercise in your diary
When something is important you make it happen, right? Business meetings are scheduled in your weekly diary – the same should apply to exercise. Consistency is key; a little and often is more effective than very infrequent sessions, even if they are longer and harder. Travelling for business also doesn’t mean your exercise programme has to stop. No gym is required for a well thought through bodyweight workout that only take a few minutes.
- “Accentuate the Positive”
Feel Good about yourself, and what you’re trying to achieve and forget everything else. Concentrate on where you want to be, not how long it will take to get there. Believe in yourself, and celebrate your achievements along the way.
