The fat Burning Zone – qué?

The so called ‘fat burning zone’ is a much used term when weight loss is the goal, and the idea revolves around burning a higher percentage of fat when you exercise at a lower intensity. But this is not necessarily the best way to burn lots of calories, or to decrease your overall body fat.

The reason is that our bodies rely on a combination of stored energy sources  in order to fuel exercise. So we use some carbohydrates, some fat and even protein. But the harder we exercise the less we rely on fat for fuel, although the harder we exercise the more overall calories we will burn, which is the key to weight loss.

Personally, I don’t get transfixed with fat burning zones, or any other zone for that matter :-) For me, the key to weight loss and fitness is to keep mixing things up both in terms of the intensity and the type of exercise undertaken, so that the body’s cardio vascular system and musculature are continuously challenged and need to adapt. And, speaking of adaptation, whether you are working out in a gym, or on your own from home, you need to change your exercise programme at least every 4 weeks to ensure that your body continues to have to adapt and avoid a plateau.
