Before and After – The Transformation

We’ve all seen before and after pictures; for example, the ‘before’ body – out of shape carrying a few extra pounds. Then the ‘after’ body – toned, and leaner with a happy smiling face. These pictures can speak louder than words about the transformation from unfit to fit; from a more ‘padded’ physique to a leaner one.

Before and after pictures are used to promote the latest diets, pills that claim to help you to lose weight, cosmetic surgery, aesthetic procedures and also feature on the web sites of some fitness professionals.

I have chosen not to take before and after photos of my clients, even for those whose goals have included weight loss, although there have been amazing transformations nonetheless. But some of the most impressive transformations can’t be depicted in a photograph. These transformations are measured in achievements, and no ‘before’ and ‘after’ picture can accurately capture that.

At this time of year, we traditionally take stock of what’s going well, and what’s not going well in our lives including health and fitness. This type of reflection is great because it gives us the opportunity to re-evaluate what’s important, to see where there’s room for improvement, and to determine what action is needed to make those improvements. But between seeing where there’s room for improvement and determining what action is needed we must accept personal responsibility for making it happen.

It’s only when we recognise that we are responsible for our actions that we have the power to change our lives.

Sometimes it isn’t fun to hear that we are solely responsible for our actions, which includes our relationship with food and exercise, and we may need help to work out how to make different choices.

So, if you’re contemplating your own ‘before’ and ‘after journey in 2018, take time to really think about, and identify, the changes you want to make, then commit to taking long term, purposeful steps towards your goals.
