Are you Ready????
There are 59 days to go to the start of the 30th Olympiad in good old London town. And whatever your view of the event itself, the money that’s been spent on it,and continues to be spent or it’s overall legacy, it’s going to be a fabulous spectacle, the like of which we may not see in this country again for a very long time. If we get it right it will surely be justification for National pride.
Elite athletes from around the world will come here to compete in 26 different sports, and I doubt even ‘Mystic Meg’ could foretell what the British medal haul will be. But we certainly have plenty to cheer about in a number of events…..Jessica Ennis in the heptathlon, Victoria Pendleton in sprint cycling, Rebecca Adlington in the pool, the young Tom Daley in diving, and of course not forgetting the fabulous Paula Radcliffe. But the list goes on, and we must hope that they are all fleet of foot and strong as oxes when the eyes of the world are upon them.
I have to admit that the key to my enjoyment of these games predominantly lies with the 100 & 200 metre sprinting events. My love of sprinting started when I was at school (so way back when
) and, amongst all of the skill and passion of the athletic events, sprinting has the greatest beauty of all for me. And this has been augmented in recent years by the fluidity and grace of a very tall man in the form of Usain Bolt. He manages to cover the 100 or 200 metre distance with the greatest of ease; so much so that at the end of the race, he looks as though he’s expended no more energy than we ‘mere mortals’ would in order to run for a bus. I don’t use this word often, or lightly, but he is an awesome athlete!!
But this summer isn’t just about the Olympics, it’s a veritable ‘sport fest’ kicking off with the 14th European Football Championship, being hosted by Poland and the Ukraine, then Wimbledon and topping off with the ‘Blue Ribbon’ Olympics. If you love sport, have tickets to your favourite event, or a super huge telly that will beam the pictures straight to you without having to leave the comfort of your own home then this could be your idea of nirvana.
I can’t wait for it all to kick off, but if none of this is your thing, then I hope that the beautiful weather continues so that you at least have a means of escape
